What you’ll need to measure?
- your tape measure (metal is best)
- your step ladder
- a pen and some paper
At DIY Custom Blinds, we make it simple to order perfectly-fitted Venetian blinds for your windows—even when measuring yourself. Follow these clear steps to ensure a seamless process from start to finish.
Before We Proceed, Let's Decide the following first
Decide: Inside-Mount or Outside-Mount?
Inside-Mount (Reveal Fit): Venetian blinds are installed neatly within the window recess for a clean, modern look. Perfect for windows with enough depth to accommodate the headrail and slats.Outside-Mount (Face Fit): Venetian blinds are mounted outside the window frame, overlapping it to provide full light coverage and a bolder appearance. Ideal for shallow frames or uneven recesses.
Inside-Mount (Reveal Fit)
Width: Measure inside the recess at the top, middle, and bottom (left-to-right). Record the smallest measurement to avoid fitting issues.
Height: Measure from the top of the recess down to the sill at the left, centre, and right. Record the smallest value as your blind drop.
Depth: Measure from the windowpane or handle to the front of the recess to check there’s enough space for the headrail and slat tilt clearance.
Pro Tip: Always use the smallest measurements to ensure the blind operates smoothly without catching on the sides.

Outside-Mount (Face Fit)
Width: Measure across the full width of the window frame or architrave, then add 50 mm on each side for optimal light coverage.
Height: Measure from the top of where you want the blind installed to your desired endpoint (e.g., window sill or floor). Add 50 mm to prevent light leaks around the edges.

Record & Double‑Check
Write down your final width, height, and (for inside-mount) depth. Measure twice to ensure accuracy, preferably with two people—one to hold the tape measure and the other to record results. Clearly write dimensions like “Width 1220 mm” instead of “1.22 m” for clarity.
Place Your Order
For inside-mount Venetian blinds, we will deduct a small margin automatically so they fit perfectly within the recess. For outside-mount, blinds will be manufactured to your exact dimensions, including the extra overlap.
